South Country School District
Located on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles from New York City, the district was established in 1957 and encompasses the Village of Bellport, the hamlets of East Patchogue, North Bellport, Brookhaven, Southaven and a small portion of Medford and of Yaphank.

The district's education program supports a diversified curriculum that can be modified to accommodate individual students and a multicultural, socio-economic diverse community. The program emphasizes basic literacy skills; academic skills, particularly in social studies, science and the arts; idea processing skills; life skills and job skills.

Its mission is to provide programs to meet the educational needs of all students in an environment that stimulates intellectual curiosity and academic achievement, develops personal qualities and well being and fosters respect for individual differences.

The population of the school district, which covers 16 square miles, totals 22,878 residents and is multi-ethnic and economically diverse in nature. Enrollment in the district's four pre-kindergarten and elementary schools, one intermediate school and two secondary schools numbers 4,830. Professional and support staff numbers 700.

In response to the diversity of the population, the district's high school, Bellport High School, offers a full range of Advanced Placement Programs as well as many academic support services. In the 1998 National Merit Scholarship Competition, the school had four semi-finalists and six commended students. Over 77 percent of the students in the district continue their education after graduation and vocational training at BOCES prepares students to enter various employment opportunities.

The district tax rate is $105.88 per $1000 of assessed valuation.
