The Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center (www.gurwin.com), has provided
students participating in our PCTP grant a community based work experience. Their career and resident education program invites high school students to earn credit while exploring health careers in the growing field of geriatrics and interacting with elderly residents while developing an appreciation of the elder perspective.
The program requires a commitment of once a week for 2 hours for the duration of 15 weeks. The day of the week to be determined by Gurwin and the high school. Students spend time exploring the career opportunities in a health care facility by rotating through the departments learning about each discipline, from nutritional services to physical rehabilitation. The student will have the opportunity to develop relationships with residents in a supervised instructional environment focusing on the special needs of the elderly and the disabled.
