The mission of this school district in relation to Person Centered Transition Planning is to ensure that students with disabilities are provided with the opportunities and support needed to attain their goals in settings, environments, cultures and communities of their own choosing. These goals are based on the students' respective interests and preferences.
The Brentwood School District community encompasses an area of about 21 square miles, which is almost the size of Manhattan Island. Nearly 71,000 residents live within the boundaries of the district, which is located in Suffolk County, New York.
The community houses 17,000 families with more than 25,000 children under the age of 21 residing there. Approximately 14,000 students attend eleven elementary and seven secondary schools in what is one of New York State's largest suburban school districts.
Formed in 1856, the district's first school house was built in 1857 and in 1972 held the distinction of being the largest suburban school district and the sixth largest district in New York State with 22,000 young people attending the twenty schools within the district.
The district employs approximately 1,800 individuals in teaching and support services and is governed by a 7-member Board of Education.
Its current operating budget is about $1.7 million and its current tax rate for homeowners is $8.607 per $100 of full value. Homeowners have received a tax decrease for the past three years.
